We, Andries Jasperszoon van Vesanevelt and Master Clemens van Baersdorp, aldermen of Leiden, make known that before us came and appeared Henry Colaey, wool comber and grocer, declaring that he had bought from Adriaen Adriaenszoon van der Haerbrugge, carpenter, a house and grounds standing and situated within this city on the north side of the Cathaline Veststege, bordered on the one side to the east by Jan Pieterszoon Cattenhaer and on the other side to the west by the seller himself, extending from the front out of the aforesaid alley to the rear likewise onto [the ground of] the seller.

And the appearing party acknowledged that, by reason of the said purchase, over and above the encumbrance of a ground rent of six guilders and five stivers in free money yearly, charged on the aforesaid house and grounds to his, the appearing party's, account, he owed the aforesaid Adriaen Adriaenszoon a sum of eight hundred and fifty guilders of forty groats the piece, which he promised to pay in this manner: namely, one hundred of the said guilders in ready money, which fell due last May Day of this year sixteen hundred and eleven, together with the taking possession of the aforesaid house and grounds, both already having fallen due. And furthermore with a like hundred guilders yearly on May Day of the year sixteen hundred and twelve, the first [instalment], excepting that the last year['s payment shall be] fifty guilders, continuing thus from year to year until full payment of the aforesaid 850 guilders.

The appearing party further promised, upon his honour and integrity, in place of an oath, to pay all the said moneys in free money, without any deduction or diminution, whether for levies, subsidies, taxes, land taxes [verpondingen], or other contributions of the hundredth, fiftieth, twentieth, or tenth penny, greater or smaller, however these might be called, and by whomever these have already been imposed and levied or shall yet be, even should it be declared by placard or otherwise that a discount or reduction might and must be suffered on these and like purchase moneys; of all benefit and profit thereof the appearing party expressly renounced and waived any claim by these presents.

He bound hereunder, first specifically, the aforesaid house and grounds; item, further specifically, a bond [custingbrief] sealed by the aldermen of this city of Leiden, executed by Jaecques Lansel, wool comber, as buyer and thus principal debtor, together with Jan Carpentier, grocer, as surety and likewise as principal, under the appropriate renunciation applicable thereto, arising from the purchase of two small houses and grounds standing and situated within this city on the east side of the Wielmakersstege, further containing a sum of eight hundred and sixty-six guilders in coin as aforesaid, to be paid likewise in free money, with eighty of the said guilders yearly, of which the first year has already fallen due, last May Day of this year sixteen hundred and eleven; which bond the appearing party has placed in the hands of the aforesaid seller, for his security, as a pledge freely given, so that he may in such manner pursue and recover his guarantee thereupon in case of default of payment of the aforementioned purchase money, as is proper.

And furthermore, generally, all his other goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted. And all this in good faith and without deceit; in witness whereof this is confirmed with our seals, on the twenty-third of March of the year sixteen hundred and twelve.

Underneath was written: J. Swanenburch. Sealed, etcetera.

We, Frans Adryaenszoon van Leeuwen and master Jacob van Brouchoven, aldermen in Leiden, declare that there appeared before us Jan Kebel, wool comber, who declared that he had bought from Henrick Coleth a house and yard standing and situated within this city on the north side of the Dwersheerenstraete, bordered on the one side, to the west, by the heirs of Julius Beyma, or whoever may hold their claim, and on the other side, to the east, by Symon Jacobszoon, beer-tapster, running in front from the aforesaid street to the rear as far as the garden of the commandery; and the appearer acknowledged that he had taken upon himself the charges on the aforesaid house and yard.

He thereby took upon himself, first, a ground rent of three guilders of 40 groats each, due to the burgomasters of this city, and further a sum of seven hundred and sixty guilders of the aforesaid currency which Thomas Ondermarck still had outstanding from the sale of the aforesaid house and yard, to be paid to him in free money together with seventy guilders per year, at May-day of the year sixteen hundred and fifteen for the first payment. Of these aforesaid charges the appearer, together with Robbert Coetsman, comber, who appeared before us aldermen as surety for the debt and likewise as principal, waiving the benefit of order and of execution (ordinis et excussionis), of which he declared himself fully informed, promised to indemnify and hold harmless the aforesaid Henrick Coleth as is fitting.

Beyond this, the appearers, in the capacity aforesaid, acknowledged owing to the aforesaid Henrick Coleth a sum of two hundred and forty guilders of the said currency, which they promised to pay in this manner: namely, at May-day of the year sixteen hundred and fourteen, at the taking of possession of the aforesaid house and yard, eighty of the said guilders in cash, and at May-day of the years sixteen hundred twenty-six and sixteen hundred twenty-seven, likewise eighty guilders each time.

The appearers further promised, on their honour and good faith, in place of an oath, to pay all the aforesaid moneys in free money without any deduction or reduction, whether for aids, subventions, assessments, land taxes (verpondingen), or other contributions of a hundredth, fiftieth, twentieth, tenth part or more or fewer pennies, however these might be named, and by whomever they have already been imposed and levied or shall be imposed — even should it be declared by placard or otherwise that on these and similar purchase moneys a reduction or discount should or must be allowed — of all advantage and benefit of which the appearers expressly renounced and waived hereby, hereby binding, first, the aforesaid Jan Kebel specifically with the aforesaid house and yard, and further both appearers generally with all their respective goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted.

The aforesaid Jan Kebel further promised to release his aforesaid surety in this matter from the said suretyship, under the same binding as above. In witness whereof this is confirmed with our seals, on the twenty-eighth of March in the year sixteen hundred and fourteen. Signed below: J. Swanenburch. Sealed, etc.

In the margin: The last bond of this deed, for two hundred and forty guilders, promised by Jan Kebel to Henrick Coleth, has been redeemed by the aforesaid Jan Kebel, such that Henrick Coleth, appearing at the secretary's office, acknowledged himself fully and entirely paid thereof, and through misunderstanding had the whole deed cancelled — whereas the first bond still remains unpaid, so that the promise of indemnity remains still in full force. Done the 28th of April 1616.

Today, the 8th of January in the year 1619, there appeared before me, notary public, and before the witnesses named hereafter, Henrick Gallant and Aeltgen Tamssen, his lawful wife, who had previously been the widow of Jan Houck, of the one part, and Ysaack Aellerton, tailor, of the other part.

The said Henrick Gallant and Aeltgen Tamssen acknowledged and declared that they had hereby placed, and the said Aellerton had accepted from them, the little son of the said Gallant and his wife, begotten by her with her first husband, named Jan de Houck, presently about twelve years old — and this with the consent and agreement of the said Jan de Houck himself, as he, appearing before me the notary and the witnesses, likewise declared — for the term of twelve consecutive years, to begin on Vrouwelichtmis day 1619 next coming.

This was agreed so that the said Aellerton should, during the said term of twelve years, provide for, feed and raise the said Jan de Houck with all proper necessities, whether of food, drink, clothing, linen and wool, shoes and all else, as is proper, reasonable and fitting, both in sickness and in health, indeed in the same manner as his own children; and during the said term also to teach and instruct him in the trade and craft of tailoring, together with all that pertains thereto, so far as he knows it himself, without keeping anything back from the said Jan de Houck in this respect; likewise to guide and instruct him in the fear of the Lord, and to have him taught to read and write so far as he may thereby help himself; and further also to keep good watch and oversight over the said Jan de Houck, as a father is bound to do over his child.

For his part, the said Jan de Houck shall be bound, during the said term of twelve years, to serve the said Ysaack Aellerton with all diligence, industry and fidelity, and to allow himself to be employed by him, both in his craft and otherwise as is proper, and likewise to allow himself to be instructed, taught and guided accordingly; and likewise to obey and be obedient to the said Aellerton, his master, in all things proper and reasonable, as a good servant is bound and ought to do; item, also diligently and carefully to attend to, perform and practise his craft, to the greatest profit and advantage of his master; and generally, in all things that are proper, to conduct and behave himself such that his said master shall have no lawful and sufficient reason to complain of him or to dismiss him.

To this end the said Jan de Houck shall not, during the said term of twelve years, be permitted to depart or leave his said service, nor to enter into the service of anyone else, nor to hire or bind himself, whether within this city or elsewhere, wherever that might be, but shall be obliged to serve out his said bound term of twelve years, or else, in default thereof, be held to compensate, pay and satisfy his said master, immediately and without delay, for the damage and loss which he might thereby come to suffer, to the latter's satisfaction — for which his goods are likewise expressly declared hereby to be bound and liable to be proceeded against. And in case all such damage from inconvenience, loss of service and everything else which he, Aellerton, might thereby come to suffer, could not be recovered from the goods of the said Jan Houck, the said parents of the same Jan de Houck shall be bound to give the said Aellerton satisfaction thereof out of their own goods, as is proper.

The said parents shall likewise be bound to see to it that their said son and stepson respectively shall serve out and complete his said bound term of twelve years, without allowing him to withdraw or depart from the said service before the term is completed, it being further agreed that they shall in every way be obliged to work towards and use all diligence that the said term be completed. And should the said Jan de Houck nevertheless run away or wish to bind himself to another, they, as his parents, shall be obliged to prevent and forestall this, if it be possible, since they have made the said placement for the benefit, use and profit of their said child; and if it cannot be prevented, they shall be obliged to compensate, pay and satisfy the said Aellerton for the damage, loss and interest which he shall thereby come to suffer, as is proper.

It is furthermore stipulated that the said Ysaack Aellerton shall likewise be bound, during the said Jan de Houck's term of service, to keep him properly clothed in linen and wool, with a set of everyday clothes and a set of holiday clothes, and at the end of the said term to have a new set of clothes made for him together with a new woollen cloak, and to let him have and take away the same, together with his other clothes of linen and wool, without exception.

The said contracting parties bound themselves, each on their own part, to the observance, firmness and fulfilment of the foregoing and each article thereof, their persons and generally all their goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted, to the compulsion and execution of all the Lord's laws and judges; declaring further that the appearing parties do hereby expressly renounce, waive and abandon all exceptions, graces, privileges and benefits whatsoever, none excepted, which might be advantageous to one of the contracting parties in breach and contravention hereof and prejudicial and damaging to the other, promising also that the appearing parties shall not avail themselves of any subtle devices to the prejudice thereof, all without fraud or deceit.

And the appearing parties requested of me the notary two identical instruments hereof in due form, namely that each be issued and delivered one. Thus done, executed and passed on the day, month and year aforesaid, at the office of me the notary, in the presence of Jan Carver, likewise an Englishman, who assisted in the making of the said agreement, and Pieter Pietersz. van Velsen, clerk, as trustworthy witnesses required hereto together with me the notary.

This is Henrick Gallant's mark. This is Aeltgen Tamssen's mark. This is Jan de Houck's mark. Isaac Alerton. John Carver. P. van Velsen. A.C. Paedts, notary public, subscribed, 1619.
