How this site handles your data

Last updated: 25 August 2026. This page explains what happens when you visit The Leiden Connection — what little we collect ourselves, and what the outside services used on this site collect on their own.
Who runs this site
The Leiden Connection (mayflower.radicae.nl) is run by Radicae. If you have a question about this notice or about your data, contact info@radicae.nl.
What we collect directly
This site has no user accounts, no comment section and no newsletter sign-up. The search and filter tools on the homepage run entirely in your own browser and send nothing back to us. A few small exceptions, all described below: the family poll, the Leiden's Ontzet certificate feature, The Leiden Archive Mystery game, and The Mayflower Leiden Walk, each of which asks for a name and/or an email address only if you choose to use the relevant feature.
Cookies and embedded tools
A few features on this site are provided by outside services. When you use them, that service — not us — sets a cookie or similar technology on your device:
Analytics. With your consent, this site uses Google Analytics to see which pages are useful. Analytics cookies are only set if you click "Accept" in the cookie banner; if you decline, no analytics cookie is set and no data is sent to Google. You can change your choice at any time via "Cookie settings" in the footer of any page. See Google's privacy policy.
Cloudflare Web Analytics. This site also uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and popular pages. It works without cookies and without tracking individual visitors, so no consent is needed for it.
The family poll. The "Which family are you connected to?" poll on the homepage is built and hosted by this site itself — no outside service is involved. As soon as the poll widget loads (not only when you vote), it sets one small first-party cookie (poll_voter, kept for 2 years) so a vote can later be remembered and changed; that cookie is only ever read by this site and is not used for tracking or analytics.
Leiden's Ontzet certificate. If you choose to generate a certificate, the name you type in is stored on our server (outside the public part of the site) for up to 1 year, together with a private link so you can retrieve it again. Unlock codes are currently emailed by hand by the site owner.
The Leiden Archive Mystery. This game's chapter progress and hint usage are stored only in your own browser (local storage) and are never sent to us — clearing your browser's site data will lose that progress. If you buy the full game or the education edition, we store your email address and an access token (never your game answers, and never any genealogical data) on our server, outside the public part of the site, so we can deliver and, if needed, resend your access link; that token only unlocks game content and carries no personal data of its own. The certificate you can generate at the end works the same way as the Leiden's Ontzet certificate above — the name you type stays in your browser and is not stored on our server. Online payment for this game is not switched on yet; once it is, our payment provider (Mollie) will separately process your payment details under its own privacy policy.
The Mayflower Leiden Walk. If you buy the walk, we store your email address and an access token (never any genealogical data) on our server, outside the public part of the site, so we can deliver and, if needed, resend your access link; that token only unlocks the route content and carries no personal data of its own. Online payment for this product is not switched on yet; once it is, our payment provider (Mollie) will separately process your payment details under its own privacy policy.
Research links. Some pages link out to Ancestry and MyHeritage so you can continue your own research. Where these are marked as affiliate links, clicking through may set a cookie on the advertiser's or their network's (Rakuten Advertising) site, so that a small commission can be credited to this site if you go on to take out a subscription there — this arrangement is not yet approved by that network, so no such cookie is set in practice today. This only happens if you click the link — nothing is set by simply visiting this site. See Ancestry's privacy statement and MyHeritage's privacy policy.
Embedded map. Some place pages embed a map from OpenStreetMap. Loading the map may connect to openstreetmap.org.
Supporting a record, the Collector’s Certificate and sponsoring. These small payments are handled by Mollie B.V. (Netherlands), a payment provider, which collects the payment details itself; this site never sees or stores your card or bank details. We only store an order reference, the amount, the payment status and a timestamp, outside the public part of the site, so we can confirm your payment and unlock the badge credit or certificate in your browser; no name or email address is stored for these payments. Until Mollie is switched on, the same buttons link to a personal PayPal.me page instead; PayPal, not this site, handles that payment and any data involved.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what data is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to how it is used. Since this site itself collects almost nothing about you directly, most such requests should go to the outside service in question (linked above); for the family poll, a certificate feature, the Archive Mystery game, the Mayflower Leiden Walk, or anything else about this site, contact info@radicae.nl. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch supervisory authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Changes
This notice may be updated from time to time as the site changes — for example if new research links or features are added. The date at the top will always show the latest version.
