We, Andries Jasperszoon van Vesanevelt and Jacob Paets Corneliszoon, aldermen of Leiden, make known that before us came Jan Ellis, wool comber, declaring that he had bought from Jan Adriaensszoon, laces-maker, a house and ground standing and situated within this city on the east side of the Barbarasteeg, bounded on the one side to the north by Mailjaert de Hane, running through, and on the other side to the south by Jan de Steur, likewise running through, extending in front from the aforesaid alley to the rear onto the property of Bastiaen Tanneneau.

The appearer acknowledged that he had taken upon himself, charged upon the aforesaid house and ground, a sum of four hundred and ten guilders at forty groats each, which remains owed to the heirs of Adriaen Gerritszoon Moyt and Marijtge Quyrijnsdochter van Lunenburch from a previous purchase of the aforesaid house and ground, to be paid to them in free money at sixty of the aforesaid guilders per year, the first at May-day of the year sixteen hundred sixteen; of which the appearer, as is fitting, promised to indemnify the aforesaid Jan Adriaenszoon and to hold him harmless.

Moreover, the appearer acknowledged that, by reason of the same purchase, he owed the aforesaid Jan Adriaensszoon a sum of five hundred and ninety guilders of the aforesaid currency, which he promised to pay in this manner: at May-day of the year sixteen hundred twenty-two, ten of the aforesaid guilders, and thereafter yearly, at each following May-day, sixty guilders, continuing thus from year to year until full payment of the aforesaid five hundred ninety guilders.

The appearer further promised, upon his honour and integrity in place of an oath, to pay all the aforesaid monies in free money, without any deduction or reduction, whether for aids, subventions, land-tax assessments, or other contributions of the hundredth, fiftieth, twentieth, or tenth penny, more or less, however these might be named, and by whomever they have already been imposed and levied or shall be imposed and levied; and even should it be declared by placard or otherwise that a reduction or discount must be allowed on these and similar purchase monies, the appearer expressly renounced and waived all benefit and advantage thereof by these presents.

And all this on condition that, should the aforesaid Jan Adriaenszoon default, before the feast of Jacobi of the coming year sixteen hundred sixteen, in paying off the orphans' rent of six guilders per year which the orphaned children of Jaecques Walkier claim upon the aforesaid house and ground, and which he, Jan Adriaenszoon, has retained at his own charge, and moreover should he default in repaying to the appearer, before Jacobi, the sixty guilders advanced by the appearer on behalf of the same Jan Adriaenszoon to the heirs of Adriaen Gerritszoon Moyt for one year's instalment on the aforesaid house and ground, due at May-day sixteen hundred fifteen last past — then in such case, and in no other, this deed of instalment shall be held cancelled and struck from the registers, so far as concerns the payment of the aforesaid five hundred ninety guilders, and no further, provided that, in exchange, the aforesaid rent of six guilders per year shall remain charged upon the appearer with respect to the aforesaid house.

Likewise, that the aforesaid sixty guilders shall in exchange likewise remain discharged, and that the appearer, as he hereby promised, shall besides pay out and deliver to the aforesaid Jan Adriaenszoon in ready money forty-four guilders of the aforesaid currency; binding hereunder, first, specially, the aforesaid house and ground, and further, generally, all his other goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted.

In witness whereof this is confirmed with our seals, on the fourth of March in the year sixteen hundred sixteen. Underneath: J. Swanenburch, sealed.

[In the margin: On the 11th of April in the year sixteen hundred sixteen, the original of the deed registered herewith was shown at the secretary's office and cancelled.]

There appeared before the undersigned aldermen of the city of Leiden, Jan Ellis, wool comber, aged about 50 years, and Rogier Wilson, camlet weaver, aged about 34 years, both living within this city.

And they declared and affirmed, having been lawfully sworn and examined under solemn oath, at the request and instance of Ridtsart Mestersz., likewise a wool comber, that it was true that they, the appearers, have had good acquaintance with the aforesaid petitioner for about seven years past, and that during that same time they have maintained good conversation and friendship with the said petitioner within this city, such that they, the appearers, know that the petitioner has, in all his trade and conduct towards them and likewise towards everyone else during the aforesaid seven years, conducted himself honestly and virtuously, as befits and becomes a virtuous young man, without ever, to the appearers' knowledge, his having been rumoured or reputed to have committed any evil deeds, still less to have been apprehended for such. Declaring nothing further.

So truly may Almighty God help them both. Done the 20th of March, sixteen hundred and nineteen. H.P. Codijck, G. van Lanschott.

Marginal note: Note that a duplicate of this deed has been issued in the Latin language, the translation of which is attached to the copy of the minutes of the depositions.
