We, Willem Corneliszoon Tijbault and Jacob Paets Corneliszoon, aldermen of Leiden, make known that before us came and appeared Ridtsardt Meertersson, Englishman, declaring that he had bought from Rogier Wiltzon, likewise an Englishman, a house and ground standing and situated within this city on the west side of the Uiterstegracht, bounded on the one side, to the north, by Marytge Pietersdochter, widow of Michiel Pieterszoon, and on the other side, to the south, by Pieter Henricxszoon, skipper, extending in front from the street of the aforesaid Uiterstegracht to the rear onto the property of the children and heirs of Lambrecht Jacobszoon, greengrocer.

And the appearer acknowledged that he had taken upon himself, charged upon the aforesaid house and ground, and hereby takes upon himself, a redeemable ground-rent of six guilders at forty groats each and five stuivers, in free money, per year, owed to the aforesaid children and heirs of Lambrecht Jacobszoon, which rent has begun to run to the charge of the appearer since May-day of the year sixteen hundred fourteen last past; of which rent and its principal sum the appearer accordingly promised, as is fitting, to indemnify the aforesaid Rogier Wiltson and to hold him free of cost and harm.

Moreover, the appearer acknowledged that, by reason of the same purchase, he owed the aforesaid Rogier Wiltson a sum of eight hundred guilders of the aforesaid currency, which he promised to pay in this manner: one hundred of the aforesaid guilders in cash, already due and settled at May-day sixteen hundred fourteen last past, together with the taking possession of the aforesaid house and ground; likewise at May-day sixteen hundred fifteen, another hundred guilders; and thereafter yearly, at each following May-day, likewise a hundred guilders, continuing thus from year to year until full payment of the aforesaid eight hundred guilders.

The appearer further promised, upon his honour and integrity in place of an oath, to pay all the aforesaid monies in free money, without any deduction or reduction, whether for aids, subventions, land-tax assessments, or other contributions of the hundredth, fiftieth, twentieth, or tenth penny, more or less, however these might be named, and by whomever they have already been imposed and levied or shall be imposed and levied; and even should it be declared by placard or otherwise that a reduction or discount must be allowed on these and similar purchase monies, the appearer expressly renounced and waived all benefit and advantage thereof by these presents.

There further came before us, the aforesaid aldermen, Jan Meesterson, wool comber, and set himself hereby as surety and also as principal for the aforesaid Ridtsardt Meeterson, his brother, both concerning the indemnification of the aforesaid rent and its principal sum, and concerning the free payment of the aforesaid eight hundred guilders; binding hereunder, first, the aforesaid Ridtsardt specially the aforesaid house and ground, and further both appearers generally all their respective goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted. The aforesaid Ridtsardt promised to relieve his aforesaid brother, in this matter, of the aforesaid suretyship, and to hold him free of cost and harm, under the same obligation as above.

Wij Willem Corneliszoon Tijbault ende Jacob Paets Corneliszoon schepenen in Leyden oirconden dat voor ons gecoomen ende verscheenen es Ridtsardt Meertersson Engelsman verclaerende gecoft te hebben jegens Rogier Wiltzon mede Engelsman een huys ende erve staende ende geleghen binnen dezer stede aen de westzijde van de Uytterstegrafte, beleghen hebbende aen d’een sijde ten noorden Marytge Pietersdochter wedue van Michiel Pieterszoon ende aen d’ander zijde ten suyden Pieter Henricxszoon schipper streckende voor van de straete van de Uytterstegrafte voorscreven tot achter aen de kinderen ende erffgenaemen van Lambrecht Jacobszoon warmoesman. Ende bekende hij comparant op ‘t voorscreven huys ende erve t’zijnen laste genoomen te hebben ende nam daer op t’sijne laste midtsdesen een losrente van zes guldens van XL grooten ’t stuck ende vijff stuvers vrijs gelts ‘t sjaers, aencoomende de voornoemde kinderen ende erffgenaemen van Lambrecht Jacobszoon, welcke rente tot laste van hem comparant begonst heeft te loopen zedert meye daegen XVIc ende veerthien voorleden van welcke rente ende hooftsomme van dien hij comparant dienvolgende de voornoemde Rogier Wiltson als naer behooren belooffde te bevrijden costeloos ende schaedeloos te houden. Bovendien soo bekende hij comparant uyt saecke der selver coope den voornoemde Rogier Wiltson schuldich te weesen een somme van achthondert guldens munte voorscreven die welcke hij belooffde te betaelen in deser voughen te weeten hondert der voorscreven guldens gereet die meye XVIc veerthien voorleeden mitten aenvange van ‘t voorscreven huys ende erve al verscheenen zijn. Item meye daege XVIc ende vijftien mede hondert guldens. Ende voorts jaerlicx telcken meye dage daer aen volgende oock gelijcke hondert guldens geduyrende zulcx van jaere te jaere ter volre betaelinge toe van de voorscreven acht hondert guldens. Beloovende hij comparant voorts bij eere ende vromicheyt in plaetze van eede alle de voorscreven penninghen te sullen betaelen vrijs gelts sonder eenige deductie off affbreck ‘t zij van beden, subventien, schattingen van verpondinghen ofte andere contributien van Ce, Le, XXe, Xe meerder off minder penninghen hoe die oock soude moghen werden genoemt ende bij wie die alreede innegestelt ende ommegeslaeghen zijn off sullen werden. Alwaer ‘t oock zulcx dat bij placcate ofte anderssins verclaert werden dat men op dese ende gelijcke cooppenninghen, cortinge ende afslach zoude moghen doen ende moeten lijden van alle voordeel ende prouffijt van dien hij comparant wel uytdruckelicken renunchieerden ende afstant dede midtsdezen vorder. Soo es noch voor ons schepenen voorseyd gecoomen Jan Meesterson wolcammer ende stelde hem zelven midtsdesen penning borge ende mede als principael voor de voornoemde Ridtsardt Meeterson zijn broeder zoo wel noopende d’indemnite van de voorscreven rente ende hooftsomme van dien als oock nopende de vrije betaelinge van voorscreven achthondert guldens hier onder verbindende eerst de voornoemde Ridtsaert specialicke ‘t voorschreven huys ende erve. Jean Meester, serge-worker, bachelor of Henloo in England, on the Koepoortsgracht, accompanied by Jean Jenengels, his acquaintance, likewise there, and Hubert Brood, his acquaintance, on the Breestraat; with Cathalina Leys, spinster of Yarmouth, likewise of England, likewise there, accompanied by Roosgen Jennyns, her acquaintance, likewise there.
