Today, the second of July in the year 1624, there appeared before me, Pieter Claeszoon van Rijn, notary public, and the witnesses named below, Janneken Charp, widow of Andries Charp, in his lifetime a tobacco seller, residing in the extension of this city of Leiden, at the sign of the Three Gilded Tobacco Pipes, assisted by me, the notary, as her chosen guardian in this matter.

And she acknowledged, for herself, her heirs, and successors, that she is well and truly indebted to Jr Gielis Silvester, merchant of Amsterdam, or the bearer hereof, in the sum of two hundred and sixty-seven Carolus guilders at forty groats each, arising by reason of, and as the remainder of, a larger sum, according to the account thereof, shown to her satisfaction.

The appearer promising therefore to lay down and pay the same sum honestly and faithfully upon demand, without seeking any delay or postponement, and that with the appropriate interest thereon [the source's wording of the rate is unclear], from the date hereof until full and effective payment; to which end she is content, of her own free will, to allow herself to be condemned at her own cost, according to the tenor hereof, by the magistracy of this city, specially and irrevocably appointing for this purpose Jan van Kuyck and Jan Mote, attorneys, jointly or each individually.

The appearer promising to hold all the same as valid, all this moreover with the obligation of her person, and further, generally, all her goods, household effects and furnishings, and otherwise, none excepted, subject to the execution of all the lord's rights and courts of law, with recovery of the costs incurred and suffered thereby. Consenting that an instrument in form be drawn up and issued hereof by me, the notary.

Thus done at her dwelling house, situated as above, in the presence of Rosier With, tobacco seller, and Henrick Arienszoon Wortel, my clerk, as witnesses requested hereto. Janneken + Charp, her mark set. Roger White. H.A. Wortel, 1624. Quod attestor [thus I attest], P.C. van Rhijn, notary public, 1624.

There appeared before the undersigned aldermen of the city of Leiden, Alexander Prijs, camlet weaver, aged about fifty-three years, and Rogier Wit, grocer, aged about thirty-six years, who, having been lawfully sworn and examined under solemn oath, at the request of Jan Soet, dyer, testified and declared it to be true that the aforesaid petitioner is a resident of this city and a man of honour, who in his trade, conduct and dealings has shown himself to be none other than a man of honour ought and is bound to be, without the deponents ever having heard or understood that he was rumoured or reputed to have been involved in any evil deeds, offences or misdeeds, still less that he had ever been apprehended for any such thing.

The deponents gave as the ground of their knowledge that they have had good acquaintance and dealings with him for about two or three years within this city. So truly may Almighty God help them.

Done the 7th of July, sixteen hundred and twenty-five.
