We, Andries Jaspersz van Vesanevelt and Mr. Clemens van Baersdorp, aldermen of Leiden, attest that before us appeared Jan Jansz Blomsaet, baker, who acknowledged, for himself and his heirs, that he had sold, and accordingly hereby transferred, to and for the benefit of Thomas Roversz., Englishman, a house and lot standing and situated within this city on the west side of the Barbarasteeg, bounded at present on both sides, south and north, by Jacob Sulloff, with common side walls, extending from the front of the aforesaid alley to the rear, with a free wall of its own, against the lot of Aelbert Cornelisz. van Berckendael — the aforesaid house standing, built and made, and used and inhabited, as it presently is.

And that free of any encumbrance, but subject to such conditions and warranties as are contained in the deeds by which the property was previously conveyed, which he, the appearer, hereby handed over to the buyer with all rights thereto, insofar as they concern this sold house and lot — and on condition that the buyer shall, whenever necessary, provide Jaecques Sulloff (whose house is likewise included in the aforesaid deeds) with an authentic copy thereof at Jaecques's own expense, and shall likewise assist the said Jaecques and his successors at all times, as needed, with the aforesaid original deeds.

And the appearer, together with Gerrit Gerritsz van Barrevelt, miller, who appeared before us aldermen as guarantor and also as principal, renouncing the benefit of order and discussion, of which he declared himself fully informed, likewise promised, in addition and under the aforesaid conditions, to free and warrant the aforesaid house and lot, as is lawful, from all encumbrance and burden with which it might be charged, under general obligation of all their respective goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted.

The aforesaid Jan Jansz further promised to relieve and hold harmless his aforesaid guarantor in this matter on account of the aforesaid suretyship, under the same obligation as above.

Furthermore, the said Jan Jansz acknowledged himself, on account of the aforesaid sale and transfer, to be fully and entirely satisfied, paid, and content, the last penny with the first, namely by a bond of indebtedness (custingbrief) for a sum of four hundred and seventy-five guilders, to be paid with three hundred and twenty-five of the aforesaid guilders in cash, and the remaining one hundred and fifty guilders on May Day of the year sixteen hundred and seventeen.

In witness whereof this is confirmed with our seals, on the twenty-second of February of the year sixteen hundred and seventeen. And it was signed: Swanenburch, sealed and [the original document breaks off here].

We, Gerrit van Lantschot and Christoffel Dircxzoon van Nieuwenhoven, aldermen of Leiden, make known that there came and appeared before us Thomas Rogierszoon, Englishman.

And he acknowledged, for himself and his heirs, to have sold, and accordingly transferred by these presents unto and for the benefit of Mardecheus Colven, dealer in old clothes, a house and grounds standing and situated within this city on the west side of the Barbarasteeg.

Bounded, according to the last old title-deed thereof, on both sides — that is, on the south and the north — by [land of] Jacob Fusteytrapiers; running from the front, out of the aforesaid alley, to the rear, with a free wall of its own, against the ground of Aelbert Corneliszoon van Berkedael; all just as the aforesaid house presently stands built and made, and as it is used and inhabited; and further with such conditions and warranties as are contained in the decree-deed and two other old title-deeds thereof, which he, the appearer, delivered over to the buyer by these presents, with all the right and title thereto, to the end that he might thereby acquire the same as fully as if he, the appearer, were himself the owner.

The appearer likewise promised, in addition and under the aforesaid conditions, to warrant and free the aforesaid house and grounds from all encumbrance and burden that might have been placed thereon by him during the time of his ownership, binding thereto, generally, all his goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted.

Furthermore, the appearer acknowledged himself, on account of the aforesaid sale and transfer, to be well and fully satisfied, paid and content, receiving the last penny with the first, namely with a sum of three hundred guilders at forty groats the piece, in ready money, and all this in good faith and without deceit or guile.

In witness whereof, this is confirmed with our seals, on the first of April, anno sixteen hundred and twenty. Underneath was signed: J. Swanenburch, sealed, etc.
