We, Jasper van Banchem and Frans Adryaenszoon van Leeuwen, aldermen of Leiden, make known that there came and appeared before us Cornelis Stevenszoon van Suylen, carpenter, declaring openly, pursuant to certain written conditions, to have bought from Gillis Elsevier a parcel of vacant, unbuilt land, situated within this city in a certain common alley and passage issuing on the south side of the Nonnensteeg, marked according to the map and conditions made thereof with the letter E, bounded on the one side by Pineas Eduwaertszoon, as buyer of parcel D, and on the other side by the aforesaid common passage, and adjoining it the outlet of parcel F, which the seller retains for himself, extending from the aforesaid common passage in front to the rear against the aforesaid parcel F.
And he, the appearer, acknowledged that, by reason of the said purchase, he was indebted to the aforesaid Gillis Elsevier in the sum of one hundred and thirty guilders of forty groten the piece, which he, the appearer, together with Cornelis Arentszoon, mason (who appeared likewise before us, the aforesaid aldermen, as surety and principal debtor, renouncing the benefits of order and discussion, of which he declared himself fully informed), promised to pay in this manner: namely, with one true sixth part thereof, amounting to twenty-one of the aforesaid guilders, thirteen stuivers and five penningen, on May Day next coming in the year 1611; and thereafter yearly, on each following May Day, a like sum of twenty-one guilders, thirteen stuivers and five penningen, continuing thus from year to year until the full payment of the aforesaid 130 guilders.
The appearers further promised, on their honour and integrity in place of an oath, to pay all the aforesaid moneys in good current money, without any deduction or reduction, whether for aids, subventions, assessments of land taxes, or other contributions of a hundredth, fiftieth, twentieth, tenth, or more or less part, however these might be named, and by whomever they have already been imposed and levied or shall be imposed and levied; and even should it be declared by placard or otherwise that a reduction or discount should or must be allowed on these or similar purchase moneys, the appearers expressly renounced and relinquished hereby all benefit and advantage thereof; binding hereunto, first, the aforesaid Cornelis Stevenszoon specifically the aforesaid parcel of land, and further both appearers generally all their respective goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted; whereby the aforesaid Cornelis Stevenszoon further promised to indemnify and hold harmless his aforesaid surety on account of the aforementioned suretyship, under the same obligation as above.
And all this in good faith and without deceit; in witness whereof this deed is confirmed with our seals, on the 9th of August in the year 1610. J. Swanenburch. And it was sealed, etcetera.
