Deed. Today, the 30th of November 1627, there appeared before me, Cornelis Dircxzoon van Grotelande, notary public admitted by the Court of Holland upon the nomination of the city of Leiden, and before the undersigned witnesses, William Britsman, tobacco merchant residing within Leiden, known to me, the notary.
And he declared and acknowledged hereby, for himself and his heirs, to be truly indebted to Samuel Nugat, tobacco merchant residing in London, or to whoever shall lawfully obtain his right in this matter, in the sum of sixty-four guilders of forty groten the piece, and ten stuivers, arising from the like tobacco delivered to him to his full satisfaction; which sum of sixty-four guilders in the aforesaid currency, and ten stuivers, he the appearer is bound and obliged, as he hereby promises, to repay and pay upon demand of the aforesaid Samuel Nugat, or whoever shall lawfully obtain his right, and that in ready money, nothing whatsoever excepted, and moreover precisely and without any further delay, postponement, or deferral, on penalty that, should he the appearer fail to do so, he shall then, from the day of the demand, pay interest at the rate of one in sixteen per year in ready money until full satisfaction is made, without however being permitted, under pretext of the said interest, to delay or defer payment in any manner.
For this he the appearer binds his person and all his goods, movable and immovable, present and future, none excepted, submitting the same to the constraint and execution of all the lord's rights and of the law, with recovery of the costs incurred thereby. He the appearer consented that one or more instruments in proper form be drawn up and issued hereof by me, the notary.
Thus done within Leiden, at the office of me, the notary, in the presence of Pieter Hulleth and Harman Lodewijcxzoon, clerk, as trustworthy witnesses hereto required together with me, the notary. Willim Bretsman. H. Lodewijcx. P. Hulleth. C.D. van Grotelande, notary public.
